Brisbane is the capital of Queensland and the third most populated city in Australia. The town lies in the area known as South East Queensland, and extends from the Sunshine Coast in the north to the Gold Coast in the south.
Brisbane River, which winds through the city center means a lot to the city's geography. There are several parks along the river bank, including the city's botanical garden and you can also find an artificial beach along the river.
The local nickname for the city is "Brissy", or "Brisneyland" and "Bris Vegas" - all of which refer to the particularly relaxed lifestyle of the city. Brisbane can proudly parade a total of 290 sunny days a year and the population spend a great deal of time outdoors especially on the beach. During the entire year there are opportunities to practice hobbies such as water scooter, windsurfing, cycling and fishing - just to name a few.
Brisbane and the Gold Coast has more than 1.8 million inhabitants. Brisbane is considered a young city, with an average age of the population being 33 years. It is also has a very multicultural area with a high proportion of Asians who have made Queensland their new home.
Brisbane enjoys a pleasant subtropical climate with hot and humid summers, while winters are temperate and dry. Even in summer, which can become incredibly hot, one is spared from the much more intense summer heat that the more northern, tropical parts of Queensland have. The hottest month is January with an average temperature of approx. 25° C, while June is the coldest month with an average temperature of approx. 15°C.
